Tiny habits (English version)

“Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything” by BJ Fogg focuses on the power of making small, manageable changes to create lasting habits. Fogg’s behavior model emphasizes that tiny habits can lead to significant life changes. Here are the core principles from the book:

1. Start Small: Instead of trying to make big changes, start with tiny habits that are easy to do. For example, if you want to start exercising, begin with just one push-up.

2. Anchor New Habits to Existing Routines: Identify an existing habit you already do regularly and attach the new tiny habit to it. For example, after brushing your teeth, do one push-up.

3. Celebrate Immediately: After completing your tiny habit, celebrate it immediately. This creates a positive emotion associated with the new habit, reinforcing it.

4. Focus on Specific Behaviors: Be clear and specific about the behavior you want to turn into a habit. Vague goals are less likely to be achieved.

5. Emphasize Consistency Over Perfection: The goal is to perform the tiny habit consistently, even if it’s just a small action. Consistency helps build the habit over time.

6. Adjust as Needed: If a tiny habit isn’t working, adjust it to make it easier or more enjoyable. The habit should fit naturally into your life.

7. Leverage Motivation Waves: Use periods of high motivation to take bigger steps or make significant progress, but rely on tiny habits to maintain momentum during low motivation.

8. Habit Recipes: Create simple “recipe” statements to remind yourself of the habit. For example, “After I brush my teeth, I will do one push-up.”

9. Behavior Design: Understand that behavior change can be designed and systematically approached. Fogg’s model suggests focusing on three elements: Motivation, Ability, and Prompt (MAP).

10. Celebrate Successes: Recognize and celebrate small wins regularly. This builds confidence and reinforces the habit loop.

The Tiny Habits method is about making behavior change feel easy and achievable. By starting small, celebrating successes, and gradually increasing the complexity of habits, you can build lasting changes that lead to significant improvements in various areas of your life.
